Chapter 20

Dominic

Dominic sat behind his desk, his fingers drumming against the heavy envelope resting on the polished surface in front of him. Between him, Rhys and Sebastian, the weight of it felt heavier than it should.

Sebastian leaned against the window, arms crossed, his expression tight, his jaw clenched as if holding back his thoughts, while Rhys lounged in one of the leather chairs, legs sprawled out in front of him, twirling a pen between his fingers.

Dominic exhaled slowly, running a hand over his face before he reached for the envelope and tore it open. The sound of paper rustling filled the silence as he pulled out the neatly bound report and flipped it open. His eyes scanned the first page, her name printed in bold, followed by line after line of meticulously gathered information. Home address. Workplace. Background.

She wasn’t just anyone. She was special. And they had let her down.

Dominic swallowed hard, his grip on the paper tightening.

He couldn’t stop thinking about that night, the moment on the balcony. The way the city lights had reflected in her eyes as she spoke, her voice quiet but steady. The way she had looked at him, like he was more than his money, more than his power, more than his reputation. It had been the first time she had been with someone, and it hadn’t been about what he could offer her. It had been about him. Just him.

The way she had felt in his arms, soft yet certain, like she belonged there. Like she had wanted him, not for any reason other than the fact that it was him.

It had meant something to him.

It had meant everything.

Now she thought they had abandoned her. And in a way, they had.

“We need to find her,” he muttered, more to himself than the others. “She thinks we left her. She thinks we didn’t care.”

Rhys’s usual smirk was absent. “She’s not wrong,” he admitted. “We let her believe that. We... We shouldn't have left her.”

Sebastian finally spoke, his voice firm but quiet. “Then we make it right. We need to show her that she was never just a passing interest, that she means more to us than she thinks. We have to prove she matters to us.”

Rhys whistled low, breaking the heavy silence that had settled over them. “Well, there she is. Neatly packaged and delivered straight to us.”

Sebastian shot him a sharp look, saying nothing, but the weight of his disapproval was clear.

Dominic ignored them both as he turned the page. A photograph was attached, a candid shot of her exiting a café, completely unaware of the camera. Something about it made his chest tighten, the familiar sense of protectiveness stirring to life.

“She’s not going to be happy about this,” Dominic muttered.

Rhys snorted. “That’s putting it lightly. She’ll be furious.”

Sebastian finally spoke, his voice low and measured. “We didn’t have a choice. We needed to find her, and this was the only way.”

Dominic tapped his fingers against the desk. “If we go to her now, it’ll backfire.
